Known as the "Pearl of the South," Agadir is an internationally renowned seaside resort. The city's origins date to the 16th century and Portugal's wealthy trade with the East. A scene of struggle between Moroccans and Portuguese, Agadir was also home for a time to the famed - or infamous - Barbary pirates. Today, Agadir is a graceful and modern resort town, for the city was nearly completely rebuilt following a catastrophic earthquake in 1960. Surrounded by the rich plains of the Souss Valley, Agadir offers miles of stunning beaches lined with graceful mimosa trees and colourful bazaars.
